Marquette University, unofficially known as MU, is a private, coeducational, Jesuit, Roman Catholic university located in Milwaukee, which is the largest city in the state of Wisconsin, the county seat of Milwaukee County, as well as the 23rd most populated city in USA.
During the 2008 census, the population of Milwaukee City was estimated at a number of more than 600 000 inhabitants, more of whom were living in the Milwaukee–Racine–Waukesha Metropolitan Area: 1,739,497 inhabitants.
Marquette University was founded in 1881, by John Martin Henni, first starting as Marquette College, being named after Father Jacques Marquette, S.J., who was a renowned 17th century explorer and missionary. It officially got the university status in 1907, Marquette University High School, which was the former preparatory department of the university, becoming a separate institution, in the same year.
Today, Marquette is the largest private university in the state of Wisconsin, as well as one of the largest Jesuit universities in USA, offering 11 colleges and schools, which include the Marquette University School of Dentistry, the Marquette University Law School, as well as the largest college at Marquette: the Helen Way Klingler College of Arts and Sciences.
The athletic teams at Marquette are known as the Marquette Golden Eagles, which have the Golden Eagle as their mascot, and who compete in the NCAA Division I, including in the Big East Conference, in 11 different sports, including basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, as well as in several other sports areas.
In 1962, the university was the 1st US College to accept a Hispanic to play basketball on the college level. In 2009, due to the university’s fame, CNN named Milwaukee as `one of America's great college basketball towns`.
